I have read numerous places that an artist should always sign their full name, title, date, etc. on the back of their paintings. I paint on stretched canvas. On an unframed painting, does that mean I should sign on the back of the canvas, on the stretcher strip, on the canvas edge that is stapled to the stretcher strip, or should I just attach a card with the information to the back of it?

Thanks.

I've wondered the same thing. I can see no one wants to share...lol.

I know, I have asked this question on several forums and only gotten a couple of answers. One artist signs the back of the canvas with Sharpie. I did that on one of my paintings, but it just didn't look very professional. Another artist says he types the info on a card and attaches it to the back. So, I still haven't figured out how I should do it.

I always sign the back of my paintings with a sharpie. I also add the year and title. I never sign the front of my paintings though. I just never liked the way my signature looks on my paintings, my drawings and watercolors I always sign on the front. I guess it's just up to you how you want to do it. You are the artist after all, so you can do what you want with and to your own work. There is no set way of doing things, it's art dude, do it how you feel.
